]]> http://kristinfleischmann.com/uncategorized/upcoming-events/feed/ 0 Berlin http://kristinfleischmann.com/uncategorized/berlin/ http://kristinfleischmann.com/uncategorized/berlin/#comments Sat, 07 Aug 2010 14:50:41 +0000 Chica Bonita http://kristinfleischmann.com/?p=181 I traveled to Berlin this Summer with other MFA students from Washington University to study art, culture, and history.  We rented studios at Kulturproject and had two weeks to put together work responding to our experiences during our stay.  My inspiration came from laminate flooring I saw at the East German Stasi Prison of the DDR (Deutsche Democratic Republic).   I deconstructed the shapes of laminate floor pattern and cut them out of cotton and synthetic velvet.  I sewed the fabric shapes and struggled to find beauty in an image that had witnessed so much trauma.   I then reconstructed the DDR floor pattern.  The slow, meditative process and floor arrangement of the piece is influenced by Buddhist mandalas. The work searches for beauty within the trauma of Berlin’s Cold War history and is an action for healing.
